ESD Association standard ANSI/ESD S20.20-1999: Development of an
Electrostatic Discharge Control Program.
Posted 11 Feb 2000 |
The ESD Association has published a new standard ANSI/ESD S20.20-1999: Development of an Electrostatic Discharge Control Program. Also approved as an ANSI standard, the standard covers the requirements necessary to design, establish, implement, and maintain an ESD control program to protect electrical or electronic parts, assemblies and equipment susceptible to ESD damage from Human Body Model (HBM) discharges greater than or equal to 100 volts. ANSI/ESD S20.20 can be tailored to specific applications or requirements. Administrative sections cover development of an ESD Control Program Plan, Training Plan, and Compliance Verification Plan (routine audits). Whilst technical parts of the Standard have some specific requirements covering areas such as grounding, personal grounding, protected areas, packaging, labelling, equipment, and handling. A flexible approach to compliance will allow users to develop and implement a technically adequate and cost effective plan for their own needs. | IEC Technical reports give guidance on electrostatic damage prevention in electronics manufacture |
IEC 61340-5 Specification for the protection of electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena Sections 1 and 2 have have now been published as Technical Reports. IEC 61340-5-1 Specification for the protection of electronic devices rom electrostatic phenomena- Section1: General requirements incorporates much of the material given in EN100015 in a consderably updated and enhanced document. It incorporates substantial normative Annexes on test methods, including shielding bag test, ioniser test and charge decay test. The Technical Report gives rules which, when followed, minimse the risk of electrostatic damage to electronic devices of damage threshold greater than 100V (human body model). This includes most, but not all, components and assemblies handled in electronics manufacturing. IEC 61340-5-2 Specification for the protection of electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena- Section2: User Guide complements IEC 61340-5-1 and provides a more readable guide to static damage prevention. It include some useful explanation and background in support of the guidance and a wealth of practical information. IEC documents may be bought online from the IEC Web Store and from national sales outlets. For UK readers the reports will be available from;
